Athletics

The Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest Participate in several sports. We play Shinty, Cricket, and also participate in Highland Games Athletics.

Shinty or Camanachd, is one of Scotland’s oldest sports. It was originaly played by the clans to make themselves ready for battle. It has been descibed as one of the most skillful and fastest games played in the world (not at our level of expertise however). The Irish play Shinty but call it Hurling. They also use very different sticks or “camans”. Our 79th lads sometimes play Shinty against the Confederates during a truce at reenactments. The 79th lads are currently undefeated vs. the Confederates, however they did allow the Confederates to score once.

Much like other peoples that the British brought Cricket to during colonization, we modified the game. We still bat, bowl, and score in the original fashon, we just made some changes that make the game go faster.

Many of our lads participate in athletics at Highland Games in our area. The traditional games that are played in the Northwest may include: the 92 Pound Stone Toss, the 28 Pound Weight for Heigth, the 28 Pound Weight for Distance, the 56 Pound Weight for Distance, the Portland or Breamar Stone for Distance, the Sheaf Toss, the Hammer Throw, and the Caber Toss.
