Our History
In 1991, a group of Civil War reenactors in Oregon formed Company C, 79th Highlanders, New York State Militia. Over the next few years, it was discovered that reenacting built strong bonds between the men that participated. As the company grew, a few young men joind the unit, and it was observed how the unit helped these young men develop into responsible and successful adults. At that time, the 79th started to implement chages designed to help with the development of young men, and a new mission for the unit was established.
As time passed we decided to add a branch dedicated to working with young woman, and the Caledonian Relief Society was created. They participate in Civil War reenacting as civillians. Their mission is to help young ladies develop into responsible and successful adults, just as the 79th does with young men.
In 1996, the Cameron Highlanders of the Northwest registered with the IRS as a 501 (c) 3, non-profit, community service, youth organization.
